Whistleblower is DLC for Outlast and you play as Waylon Park. Waylon is the one who sent the email to Miles in the first game that lead him to Mount Massive Asylum to investigate it. This is the story of Waylon and shows more of the story at the Asylum. The game equips you with a single camcorder that you use to help survive in the Asylum.

It’s technically possible to get 100% in a single playthrough but you will need to play the game on Insane difficulty. Just because it’s unlocked from the beginning doesn’t mean you should jump right into this mode because it’s perma-death and when you die you’ll start at the beginning. This guide will be setup for a two playthrough run as it will make it much easier on you to get the 3 story related trophies, 2 collectible trophies and a single trophy for playing on insane difficulty. It’s also worth noting that the two trophies related to the collectibles are missable and you will need to start a new game if you miss one.

Step 1 – Play on normal and get all collectibles
Start a new game on normal. Normal will give you plenty of extra batteries that will help you navigate the dark areas. During this run, you will want to find all of the collectibles. If you miss one, you will need to start a new game. The collectible trophies are missable, but you can mitigate the necessity to replay the entire game by creating manual saves throughout, so in the event you do miss one, you can start from a previous save point and continue onward from that point.

Use this run to become familiar with the game, locations and the variants (enemies) as you will need to use what learn here for the next step.

You will have earned during this step the following trophies:

Gas Leaker
Shocker
Whistleblower
Archivist
Legacy

Step 1.5 (optional) – The key to get the final trophy as described in the next step is knowing the game inside and out. For this reason, I highly recommend practicing all of the difficult sections on Nightmare difficulty. This is the same difficulty as insane but gives you checkpoints and saves. The good thing is that this isn’t quite as brutal and difficult as it was in the base game.

Step 2 – Play the game on Insane difficulty
Insane mode is the hardest difficulty. The difference between this and normal is that you will only be allowed to carry 2 extra batteries with fewer batteries lying around the Asylum. Enemies will react to noise sooner and they move faster. The biggest challenge in this trophy is that there are no checkpoints and you can’t save. This will mean that you will have to beat the game in a single sitting without dying. Death will mean that you respawn at the beginning of the game. You can pause if you need a break but you can’t exit the game.

If you make it to the end in one piece, you’ll earn:

Bowelwhistler

Outlast Whistleblower Gas Leaker
Gas Leaker

Turn of the gas

Story related, can’t be missed. You will just simply need to turn the gas valve as part of the main story mission.

Outlast Whistleblower Shocker
Shocker

Turn off the electricity

Story related, can’t be missed. You will need to shut down the power that’s electrifying the fence. After you do it for the first time, this trophy will pop

Finish the Whistleblower DLC

Story related, can’t be missed. Simply beat the game on any difficulty.

Finish the DLC in Insane mode

Similar to the base game, there is an insane mode. Insane mode is the hardest difficulty. It’s Nightmare difficulty with no checkpoint or saves. This will require you to finish the game without dying and you have to do it in a single sitting. You can pause the game so if you need a break for any length of time, you can do that. But if you die at any point in the game, you will respawn right back at your car in the beginning of the game. If you die from a failed jump, you will have to start over.

Also make sure you manage your battery power. There are far fewer battery pickups but as long as you don’t use the night vision unnecessarily, you won’t have any issues. Just remember that you only have to turn it on for no more than a second or two at a time to keep you pointing in the right direction.

You can play the game on Nightmare difficulty first to get an idea of what to expect since it’s the same as Insane. On Nightmare, you can die and make use of checkpoints so it’s a perfect opportunity to practice particular sections. If a section does pose an issue for it, get there on Nightmare difficulty and create a manual save and practice it and reload the save over and over again until you can effortlessly pass the section without dying. Overall, this is not as difficult as the main game was.

Here’s a video of my insane walkthrough. It is done as a speedrun so you can quickly get through the game in less than an hour.

Complete all recordings

Whistleblower has 31 collectibles. These are missable trophies. The collectibles must be gained in a single playthrough but they do save as soon as you pick them up. You can create manual save points often along the way so if you do miss one, you can just reload a save prior to your missed collectible and play the game from that point on instead of the beginning.

Notes (recordings) (18) – These are collected by using your camcorder to record something. To record with your camcorder, you just need to hit to bring it out. If you’re holding your camcorder, it is recording. Remember, as long as you don’t have night vision on, your battery won’t drain. You’ll know when you’re recording a note when you hear Waylon writing on a notepad and you’ll see the camcorder icon in the bottom right corner of your screen blinking. Hit  to bring up your list of collected notes.

Documents (13) – Documents are your traditional collectible. These are picked up around the environment. These look are flashing blue folders with the word “confidential” written on the front of them. Hit  to bring up your list of collected documents

Been playing through WhistleBlower on normal. Have got to the section were you grab the key in the chapel and high tail it back to the gym. The game glitches here for me. The killer does not get killed but continues to walk around, muttering to himself. Tried several times to no avail. Bang goes the collectable trophy for me! Anyways, thank you for the great guides, love your hard work, keep it up matey. 🙂

I’ve just used this guide for the collecting of the documents and recordings trophies.
Very clear guide, and I’m now not as scared while playing this game as I used to be!

Now to build myself up for both of the Insane trophies!

Thanks Brian. Keep up the good work.
